Cruise Diary Links |
A Tropical CruiseSaturday, February 19, 2011 And so our cruise is done. It was a wonderful fourteen day excursion in an enormous floating hotel, the Grand Princess, travelling to nine different Caribbean islands. It was relaxing, and fun – as all cruises are supposed to be – but it also had an intense personal piece. My maternal forbears came from the island of Grenada, and I was able to trace some of my roots there. As well, in the early 1970s, I worked for almost two years on the island of St. Kitts, and I was able to take my wife and two friends to the places that meant a lot to me so long ago. So, it was a voyage in the tropics and a voyage into the past. Every day of the trip I made entries in a sort of diary – typing on an increasingly uncooperative computer laptop. Upon my return to Winnipeg, I began to edit and re-shape those rough notes into what I hope will be for you an enjoyable piece of light reading. I laboured away hour after hour, almost like a monk in his cell, or perhaps a cat with some catnip, until today, when I triumphantly finished the closing paragraph and put everything online. As I did with my 2004 Sabbatical journal, I’ve prepared various ways for you to dip into the material: best one? start at the beginning, of course (Part one: Going Down to the Sea in Ships). Or you can examine a Contents page, and cherry pick what you would like to read. The itinerary is also interactive, so you can click on a day or an activity and see what happened there. Finally, if you just like looking through a stack of pictures, there is a photo album for you to browse. Whatever you do, I hope you have a great time reading this little adventure.
